1980 was a big transition year. Turned 18, became a legal adult. Granduated high school and started college. Left home to live on my own, which was not that big a deal, but as a milestone in life it was. Made new friends from different walks of life. Got a real education outside of American Fork.
Other news in 1980. Mount St. Helens Eruption (May 18, Washington State). Ronald Reagan Elected U.S. President. I voted the first time that fall. Soviet–Afghan War / U.S. Olympic Boycott. The worst Carter decsion ever, when the the U.S. and over 60 countries boycotted the Moscow Summer Olympics to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Utah Jazz First Season in Salt Lake City. Din’t care then or now. Lol.
Summary: Graduated High School in the spring then went on the Heritage Tours Trip (Seminary Trip) then worked the summer mowing lawns and working at Lehi Block and Alpine Country Club. (best job ever). Took a little trip with Steve and Bob and Roger to Southern California. ANd my 1st international trip to Mexico. Worked hard getting ready for football at CEU. Went to camp, three-days, really learned how to play offensive line and and earned a starting position, only to re-injure my right knee again. After three knee surgeries, I was finished with football for good. I sent my papers in for my LDS mission and waited, it seemed forever. I was called to serve and assigned to the Oklanhoma Tulsa Mission under Pat Brian. Left in Jan 1981.
My dull red 1969 Dodge Truck and my Honda 600 Sedan, painted in bright corvette yellow. Sadley, I Rolled that Honda in the parking lot at school.
A few years ago I scanned pages from the 1980 Senior class photos and then posted them here. Surprisingly how often I refer to this page to remember people.
